Neanderthal murder case shows violence and care
Archaeologists have discovered the remains of a Neanderthal, dated to 75,000 years ago, in Shanidar Cave in Iraq. The fossil evidence indicates the individual was killed by a sharpened wooden spear that penetrated the chest, suggesting possible intentional violence or homicide. Despite this traumatic wound, other evidence shows the Neanderthal received care and support during their lifetime, highlighting social complexity and compassion within their group. The findings contribute to understanding both violent and caring behaviors among Neanderthals and challenge earlier assumptions about their social and cognitive abilities.
