An security investigation revealed that the digital advertising systems on social media platforms are being exploited by malicious entities to deliver spyware to targeted devices without user interaction, through attacks known as "zero-click." The operation relied on real-time bidding systems, which can be manipulated to identify specific devices and send spyware via targeted advertisements containing malicious code. The investigation focused on devices within Al Jazeera's network, linking over 45 devices between 2024 and 2025 to spyware developed by an Israeli company, delivered through compromised ads across extensive advertising networks. The findings highlight the danger of exploiting digital advertising as a tool for cyber intrusion, with a recommendation to tighten oversight of the advertising ecosystem and improve detection tools for malicious ads to better protect users and media organizations.
