Trump auctions seafloor rights
The Trump administration plans to auction nearly 100 million acres of Pacific Ocean seafloor for the first-ever offshore deep-sea mining leases, aiming to extract minerals like nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese. Opponents, including island communities and environmentalists, warn that deep-sea mining could cause irreversible ecosystem damage and threaten local livelihoods, with limited scientific understanding of its impacts. Industry experts and critics doubt the economic viability of such ventures, citing high costs and unproven technology, while officials argue the move is vital for national security by reducing dependency on China for critical minerals. Facing legal challenges and community opposition, the initiative raises concerns over environmental harm and the true benefits of offshore mineral extraction.
