US court rules Meta to pay $25B over consumer deception
A judge in New Mexico has ordered Meta to pay a fine of $25 billion for its involvement in consumer fraud, based on a jury verdict proving that the company exploited the data of millions of Facebook users without permission in an advertising campaign linked to a political consulting firm affiliated with Donald Trump's 2016 campaign. Additionally, Europe's data regulatory authority imposed a record fine of €1.2 billion on Meta for transferring user data from the European Union to the United States, describing the ruling as an attempt to impose regulations that restrict online free speech. Figures indicate that the US fine amounts to over $219 billion before any reduction, making these among the largest penalties imposed on the company, which has announced its intention to appeal the rulings.
