Netflix show explores a historic experiment
The article discusses the history and controversy surrounding the Stanford Prison Experiment, conducted in 1971 by psychologist Philip Zimbardo, which examined human behavior under authority in a mock prison. Originally seen as insight into how ordinary people can commit harmful acts under certain conditions, the study has faced significant ethical criticism and questions about its scientific validity due to Zimbardo’s involvement and experimental design. Modern evaluations reveal flaws, including scripted behaviors and coercive conditions, undermining its conclusions. A new Netflix series revisits the experiment with safeguards and a different approach, highlighting ongoing debates about authority, human nature, and ethical research practices.
