Dar al-Ifta on IUD and contraception rules
The Egyptian Dar Al-Ifta explains that the use of temporary contraception methods, including IUDs and modern means, is legally permissible for family planning according to Shariah, provided that certain conditions are met—such as the consent of both spouses and the absence of health hazards. It emphasizes that family planning should be carried out through mutual consultation and understanding between the spouses. No one is permitted to make a unilateral decision to prevent pregnancy unless in cases of harm or medical necessity, in which case using contraception without the other party’s consent is allowed. The statement also stresses the importance of consulting a doctor to ensure there are no health risks, while adhering to Islamic principles to safeguard the rights of both partners and public health.
