Libya faces rising bread costs amid flour and fuel shortages

Libya is facing a severe crisis in the supply of flour and fuel, threatening an increase in bread prices in the local market. Continuous increases in the price of flour—ranging from 290 to 380 dinars since January—and high transportation costs are driving up bread production expenses. Additionally, the sector is suffering from a acute fuel shortage, especially diesel essential for operating bakeries, with the price per liter rising to between 10 and 11 dinars, further increasing costs and raising the final prices of products for consumers. The deterioration of the Libyan dinar's value worsens the crisis, as it leads to higher prices for basic materials like yeast, sugar, and flour. Warnings translate into expectations of a rise in bread prices unless the government intervenes to support the sector and reduce the cost burden on bakeries and citizens.
