Why did WWII tanks carry tree trunks
The article focused on the use of tree trunks on World War II tanks, where their primary function was to help the tanks move in difficult terrain conditions, such as mud and clay, by providing a firmer surface that enabled them to regain traction and escape from ditches. They were also sometimes used as an additional outer layer to enhance protection against certain types of shells, especially high-explosive anti-tank rounds. However, the effectiveness of the trunks was limited regarding the protection of tanks from armor-piercing weapons, as they were more useful for improving mobility and overcoming challenging field conditions. These uses demonstrate that the trunks were a simple and effective field solution to the problem of tanks being unable to advance in certain situations, rather than a primary means of defense against enemy weapons.
