World Lion Day: Ancient Egypt's Lion Life
Today is the International Lion Day, observed on August 10th, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of preserving this animal known as the "King of the Jungle," and combating poaching, which led to its extinction in Egypt. Historically, lions have been associated with ancient Egyptian civilization, with some still existing until recent centuries before becoming extinct due to overhunting and climate change. The Barbary lion, considered one of the largest lions in the world, used to inhabit North Africa from Egypt to Morocco. Its groups were characterized by their large size and the thick manes on their necks. The Egyptians domesticated lions in palaces and hunted them extensively; they were also used in temples and in gladiatorial displays in ancient Rome. The extinction of the Barbary lion began around the 15th century BCE due to hunting and drought, leading to its gradual disappearance from the Egyptian and Moroccan environments. Today, it survives only in zoos in some regions.
