South Korea and US hold military drills amid North threats

South Korea and the United States plan to conduct large-scale joint military exercises from August 17 to 27, aimed at strengthening their combined defensive readiness, confronting North Korean threats, and assessing their ability to lead forces after Seoul resumes operational command from Washington. These exercises, which include simulations of real-world threats, serve as a test of both sides' effectiveness in improving their joint operations. They come in response to the weapons tests conducted by North Korea following these drills. At the same time, the United States reaffirmed that it is not withdrawing from Asia, emphasizing that it is enhancing its presence to maintain a balance of power. Washington also urges its partners to increase their responsibility and support for defense through greater investment in their own security, emphasizing that it seeks "partners, not protectorates."
