The trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur officially came into effect in May 2026. It is one of the largest free trade areas in the world, serving around 720 million consumers. The agreement aims to boost South American exports to Europe and open markets for agricultural and food products, with the reduction or elimination of tariffs on many items. However, this agreement has raised concerns among local producers within Mercosur, especially in the wine, cheese, and honey sectors, where European products face strong competition due to their quality and commercial reputation, and their limited price competitiveness. This threatens local market shares and poses economic challenges for small and medium-sized farmers. Conversely, the agreement also offers opportunities for Mercosur producers to access the European market and reduce trade barriers for their exports, while fostering cooperation in investment and services. Yet, balancing the distribution of gains remains crucial, as some producers worry that the entry of high-quality, competitively priced European products could undermine the competitiveness of local products.
