The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a bill that bans federal funding to universities that boycott Israel. This move comes in response to ongoing criticism of boycott campaigns and as a defense of American support for Israel, amid escalating protests calling for a boycott of Israel that target certain universities. The law imposes restrictions on funding to support maintaining diplomatic and academic relations with Israel, with lawmakers emphasizing that the goal is to protect rights and investigate the targeting of Israel, rather than broadly restricting freedom of expression. Meanwhile, some Democrats oppose certain provisions of the bill, arguing that it threatens academic freedom of speech.
