Egypt has turned Sinai’s flash floods from a seasonal threat into a strategic resource through a system of dams, barriers, artificial lakes and underground reservoirs known as *harabat*. North and South Sinai have a total of 561 flood-protection and rainwater-harvesting structures. During the latest wave of flooding, structures in South Sinai and the Red Sea region captured around 15 million cubic metres of water. The stored water is used for drinking and agriculture and to replenish groundwater, while also protecting residents, roads and facilities from floods. The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation is preparing for the 2026–2027 season by maintaining existing structures and building new mountain lakes and *harabat* to boost water harvesting and serve Bedouin communities.
