Over half of rejected asylum seekers to stay in UK
The bill introduced by Shabana Mahmood proposes charging asylum seekers £10,000 for settled status and implementing stricter rules for asylum claims, including changes to article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights. According to the government's assessments, a significant portion of denied applicants will remain in the UK, with over 11,700 claims expected to be rejected annually. The legislation aims to create a firmer asylum system but faces opposition from some Labour MPs and concerns from advocacy groups about long-term chaos and impact on refugees.
