Ministers mull shutting social mobility watchdog
The UK government is considering a review that could lead to abolishing or restructuring the Social Mobility Commission (SMC), which was established in 2010 to assess opportunities and inequalities. Critics argue the SMC has become ineffective and lacks the power to influence policy, and some officials believe social mobility should be a core government function rather than managed by an independent body. The proposal is part of a broader effort to enhance government-led initiatives aimed at reducing inequality and supporting disadvantaged communities.
