Oil reserves under pressure after 2.6B barrel loss
Global oil markets are facing a critical test after losing approximately 2.6 billion barrels of oil since the start of the war between the United States and Iran. This represents one of the largest cumulative losses in oil supply history, equivalent to about 25 days of global consumption. Although the reserves held by countries—estimated to theoretically cover around 300 days—are substantial, commercial inventories and strategic reserves have declined significantly, especially in the United States, which has recorded its lowest levels since 1983, with less than 200 million barrels available for use—enough to cover only about 40 days. Meeting the current supply gap remains a major challenge amid ongoing conflict and disruptions that threaten the security of global oil supply.
