Daily 40 Tons of Healthcare Waste
The article points out that Iraq produces daily between 20 and 40 tons of hazardous medical waste from hospitals and clinics. Official channels treat and destroy between 400 and 500 tons per month. However, a large portion of waste—up to 30-40% of the total—remains improperly managed, generated by private clinics and laboratories, and is either dumped in unlicensed landfill sites or openly burned. This contributes to water and air pollution and increases health risks, such as respiratory diseases and cancer. The study emphasizes that poor management of medical waste threatens to release toxic gases, spread infectious diseases, and elevate pollution levels. It calls for establishing a comprehensive waste recycling system, reducing random incineration, shutting down unlicensed sites, and improving sorting and treatment procedures to prevent toxins from leaching into the environment.
