Iraqi sulfur targets Morocco for new markets
Iraq is seeking new markets to sell its sulfur, especially following discussions between Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and his Moroccan counterpart regarding its export to the kingdom. Morocco is considered a promising market for sulfur use in the fertilizer and chemical industries, which would allow Iraq to diversify its sources of income and reduce its reliance on oil. Historically, sulfur production in Iraq began in 1971, but it declined after 2003 and was damaged during the control of Nineveh in 2014. In 2022, Iraq exported about 4,540 tons of sulfur to India for approximately $730,000. There is a need to develop infrastructure and expand the market to ensure sustainable exports. Iraq aims to organize its production and export processes to increase economic value and create job opportunities, with a focus on manufacturing industries rather than just selling raw materials.
