National grid aims for $97 million upgrade
The article focused on the Council of Ministers' approval to proceed with the national water carrier project in Jordan, which is the largest water project in the country's history. The decision included connecting the project to the national electricity grid in coordination with the National Electric Power Company, as well as approving a $97 million financing agreement with the French Development Agency. The project aims to desalinate approximately 300 million cubic meters of seawater annually and transfer it over a distance of 450 kilometers to various governorates, relying on renewable energy to supply about 40% of the kingdom’s drinking water needs. This step is considered crucial for enabling the actual operation of the project and strengthening confidence in Jordan's ability to implement its largest water project, with full funding and financial closure expected before the start of construction.
