Haredim Protest Detention Allegations
Hundreds of Haredi Orthodox Jews protested in Jerusalem against the arrest of 63 of them on charges of rioting, following an attempt to storm the residence of Deputy Supreme Court Justice Noam Sohlberg in June 2024. The protests also addressed violations related to their refusal to perform military service. The Haredim refuse to serve in the military, arguing that it would divert them from religious study and threaten their identity, leading to an escalation of the conflict with the government, which had previously mandated their service and halted financial support. The issue is linked to ongoing violence and protests, where demonstrators carry signs rejecting military service in the Israeli army.
