Ethiopian Minister of Water and Energy, Habtamu Iteta, stated that his country will control the flow of the Nile River towards downstream nations. He justified this by aiming to build new dams to promote sustainable development and generate electricity. Ethiopia plans to construct three additional dams with a total storage capacity of about 140 billion cubic meters, bringing the total capacity to approximately 224 billion cubic meters, compared to 74 billion cubic meters from the Renaissance Dam. These plans are part of an ongoing dispute with Egypt and Sudan over how the river’s water is managed. Ethiopia affirms its right to exploit its water resources, despite the two countries’ concerns about the impact on their water shares and the ongoing threat of drought, which jeopardizes regional stability.
