Iraq: Ex-Governor of Salahuddin gets 7 years for corruption
A default judgment has been issued sentencing former Salahuddin Governor Ammar Jaber Abdel Hamid to seven years in prison after his conviction for illicit enrichment in Iraq. A fine of approximately $1.3 million has been imposed, along with the confiscation of his funds as well as those of his wife and children, and a warrant for his arrest has been issued for enforcement. This comes as part of a broad campaign to combat financial and administrative corruption in the country, with ongoing investigations into public funds embezzlement and contract violations, especially following the recent dismissal of the former Deputy Minister of Oil over corruption suspicions.
