Iraqi court sentences in oil corruption
The Integrity Commission in Iraq has issued two sentences of seven years in prison each against former MP Talal Al-Zubaei and the Deputy Minister of Oil for Distribution Affairs, Ali Maarij, on charges of inflating assets and illicit enrichment. The estimated value of their illicit gains and inflated funds amounts to approximately $26.7 million (35 billion Iraqi dinars) for each individual, with both being ordered to pay amounts equivalent to the recovered funds and similar fines. These rulings come as part of the government's efforts to recover public money and strengthen institutions, having seized and recovered hundreds of millions of dollars of stolen funds through legal measures aimed at reducing the budget deficit and supporting the national treasury.
