Libya signs UN-backed election plan
The Libyan "4+4" Mini Dialogue Committee, under the auspices of the United Nations, reached an agreement paving the way for holding both presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya within no more than 24 months. The agreement includes restructuring the National High Electoral Commission, appointing a chairman and vice-chairman for the commission, and establishing a timeline to complete the elections under a unified executive authority. It also permits candidates with dual citizenship and military personnel to participate in the elections, with safeguards in place to ensure their successful conduct. Additionally, the agreement states that the new House of Representatives will address constitutional demands. This comes after nearly four months of negotiations, described as a significant step toward advancing the political process and achieving stability in the country.
