Ebola spreads to Nigeria
Nigeria announces the first confirmed case of Ebola in its capital, Abuja, involving a teenage girl who arrived from Uganda. Authorities are currently tracking 44 individuals who interacted with her to contain the outbreak. This comes amid a regional outbreak, as Kenya has reported 9 cases, Uganda has declared itself free of infections, and the outbreak of the "Bundibugyo" strain is spreading faster than previous waves, with more cases and a mortality rate of 50%. Nigeria is strengthening surveillance and monitoring measures and deploying response teams in an effort to prevent a repeat of past outbreaks that have resulted in over 4,600 deaths since 2014.
