Turkey has nominated Feridun Hadi Sinirlioğlu, Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, for the post of United Nations secretary-general. His nomination was submitted in a letter signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The move comes amid an electoral deadlock: the Security Council’s seventh straw poll failed to resolve the race, and none of the candidates managed to avoid an objection from one of the five permanent members. António Guterres’s term ends on December 31. His successor must be approved by at least nine Security Council members, with no veto, and then endorsed by the General Assembly.
