Türk Highlights Law Violations in South Lebanon
The United Nations has revealed serious violations of international humanitarian law in southern Lebanon and is conducting investigations into the crimes committed there. Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk emphasized the importance of respecting the ceasefire, the withdrawal of military forces, and enabling the Lebanese state to regain control. He pointed out the necessity of documenting violations to achieve justice and accountability, noting that restoring life to the south after the recent war is almost impossible due to the destruction of infrastructure. He also stressed the importance of the safe and dignified return of displaced persons. Türk observed a partial improvement in the human rights situation in Lebanon thanks to reform efforts and focused on the importance of achieving justice in Syria, calling for independent investigations by Syrian authorities, while noting steps taken by Damascus in this direction.
