Iran sentences singer and musicians to lashes
The Iranian regime has sentenced singer and eight musicians to imprisonment and flogging because of a live music performance on YouTube. The performance featured a softly lit stage and women wearing outfits that violated strict hijab rules. An Iranian court sentenced singer Parasto Ahmadi and her team members to 74 lashes each, a decision upheld by the appeals court in Qom Province. This has drawn international criticism, with Amnesty International deeming the punishment harsh and degrading, urging its immediate suspension due to its violation of human rights and women’s rights. The concert, streamed by Ahmadi in December 2024, garnered millions of views despite restrictions on women in public spaces, amid a decline in women’s adherence to hijab rules following the 2022 protests and the tragic death of Mahsa Amini.
