Rubio's European visit to Iceland Greece Portugal
The U.S. Department of State, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, is heading on a European tour that includes Iceland, Greece, and Portugal to bolster American diplomatic policy in the Arctic region. The visit comes after the signing of a security agreement in Greenland, which includes the establishment of two new U.S. military bases in the territory, part of efforts to strengthen Washington's influence in the area amid rising tensions—especially following Trump's repeated threats to annex Greenland. In Iceland, the focus of the talks is on economic and security cooperation, despite the island's rejection of the idea of joining the European Union, with 52.8% voting against resuming negotiations. Iceland continues to rely on the United States and NATO to ensure its security; tensions have also arisen due to its reactions to a controversial American map. The tour also includes discussions on regional security, energy issues in Athens, and relations with Lebanon in subsequent visits.
