Italy reconsiders nuclear energy after four decades
Reports indicate that Italy plans to return to nuclear energy production after shutting down its reactors nearly 40 years ago. The Senate has given the government a 12-month deadline to establish the necessary regulatory and legislative framework. Meloni's plan aims to operate small, innovative reactors by 2033-2034 to help reduce dependence on imports and energy, enhance supply security, and lower emissions. However, challenges include identifying suitable sites for the reactors, ensuring sustainable funding, and addressing public safety concerns surrounding nuclear energy. It is expected that nuclear power could contribute up to 11% of the energy mix by 2050, with the potential to increase to 22%.
