Portugal probes US use of Lajes Base
Portuguese authorities are investigating the legality of the United States' use of Lajes Air Base in the Azores during the conflict with Iran. This comes after a complaint from the left-wing opposition party, which believes that this use threatens compliance with international law. The United States is permitted to use the base during peacetime without prior approval, but wartime conditions require Portugal's consent. The Foreign Minister confirmed that the usage complies with international law, provided that operations are defensive, necessary, and limited to military targets.
