Filipino authorities detain 244 foreigners over online gambling
The Philippine authorities have announced the execution of the largest security operation of the year against illegal online gambling networks, resulting in the detention of more than 200 foreigners, most of them Chinese, during raids in the southern part of the country. The operations came in response to the activities of "Bugo" gambling platforms, which Manila banned in 2024 following their association with criminal networks accused of human trafficking, money laundering, cyber fraud, and kidnapping. The authorities targeted the operators' offices, seized technical equipment, and are investigating the detainees' roles in broader crimes, with plans to deport violators in an effort to prevent the use of Filipino territory for illegal activities.
