Eritrea and Ethiopia face potential escalation
The United States has called on Ethiopia and Eritrea to exercise restraint and return to dialogue, warning that escalating tensions between them could lead to a military or humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa region, jeopardizing regional security and international cooperation. These appeals come amid a rise in rhetoric and military actions between the two countries, most notably Eritrea severing ties with Ethiopia and accusing Addis Ababa of attempting to control Eritrean ports, amid fears that the region may slide into open conflict, threatening vital trade corridors in the Red Sea.
