Nuclear leaves Earth, new energy race above Moon
The United States is aiming to launch a nuclear reactor on the Moon's surface by December 2030, in a race against a Russian-Chinese project that seeks to supply lunar bases with power until 2036. The American project involves constructing a reactor capable of producing about 20 kilowatts of electricity and operating for five years without maintenance, while the Russians and Chinese are developing a 10-kilowatt reactor that can run for ten years. Installing and operating reactors on the Moon faces technical challenges related to transportation, cooling, and safety, in addition to risks of environmental contamination and the need to secure the uranium used. There are also warnings about increasing risks to the stability of space missions.
