Vincent Battle's Lebanon Departure
Former U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Vincent M. Battle has passed away. He was one of the most prominent diplomats in the region for over three decades, serving as Vice Chief of Mission and then as Ambassador starting in 2001, and he maintained his connection to Lebanon after his retirement. Born in New Jersey, he graduated from Georgetown and Columbia; he worked in several countries including Uganda, Pakistan, and Libya before joining the U.S. Mission in 1977. He played a key role during critical moments, such as the end of the civil war and the war on Lebanon, and participated in American evacuation operations during the 2006 war. He loved Lebanon and continued to reside there after his retirement, until his death in Beirut in 2026.
