Reasons for Election Law Anxiety
The discussion regarding the electoral law in Lebanon aims to open an early dialogue to avoid postponing or obstructing the elections. This includes examining the flaws in the current law, as well as proposals from expatriates and the Senate, while emphasizing that there is no ready-made formula or intention to change the law before the election date. It is believed that this discussion is necessary to prevent a repetition of experiences leading to election delays. It is also expected to be part of a broader settlement that includes the implementation of the Taif Agreement and a review of constitutional provisions, and is not directly linked to the issue of weapons or current political differences. The path to agreement remains long, but it is essential to initiate dialogue early to ensure the implementation of political and constitutional reforms related to the upcoming elections.
