Germany sees threefold rise in draft refusals
Germany is witnessing a significant increase in young people refusing to perform military service, with the number of objectors exceeding 12,000 in 2026. This figure is more than triple the number from 2025. This comes after the implementation of a new military service law that maintains voluntary conscription and allows for its reinstatement when needed. In 2026, the army sent approximately 450,000 questionnaires to consenting adult males to assess their suitability. The main reasons for the rise in objections include ideological beliefs. It is expected that the total number of resisters will reach 20,000 by the end of the year. Meanwhile, Parliament is preparing to reintroduce compulsory military service if the security situation worsens or if there is a shortage of volunteers.
