Lebanon and the Sectarian Final
The article discusses the influence of basketball in Lebanon as a mirror of sectarian and political conflicts among Lebanese communities. It highlights how the performance of national teams serves as an indicator of sectarian affiliations and the balance of power among Sunnis, Christians, Shiites, and Druze. The piece explains that basketball matches concretely reflect the sectarian distribution and societal divisions within Lebanon, and are used as a measure of political and sectarian presence, with game results perceived as signals of a community’s standing and influence. The article emphasizes how sectarian conflicts manifest in sports, where the logic of winning or losing mirrors political rifts and disputes. It suggests that Lebanon has become akin to a false sectarian league, with everyone competing for influence and belonging. Finally, it underscores that acknowledging this reality could be a step toward addressing genuine national divisions, rather than relying on imaginary myths of national unity.
