Iran Bank Faces US Scrutiny
The article focused on the U.S. sanctions imposed on Export Bank of Iran, which has been listed on sanctions lists for years due to its involvement in facilitating financial activities linked to Hezbollah. In the context of escalating tensions against Iran and Hezbollah, the United States requested Lebanon to work on closing the bank and revoking its license, a process that requires legal actions by Banque du Liban (the Lebanese Central Bank). This is part of a broader pressure campaign aimed at financially isolating Iran and Hezbollah, with a focus on engaging Lebanese authorities in efforts to tighten control over networks related to them. Washington's stance reflects an attempt to shift pressure from direct sanctions on the bank to urging Lebanon to take internal measures, placing Lebanon in a difficult position of balancing its sovereignty with its commitment to U.S. pressures.
