Candidates for UN Secretary-General amid trust concerns
As the tenure of UN Secretary-General António Guterres approaches its end on December 31, 2026, unofficial consultations and votes are currently taking place within the Security Council to select his successor, amidst a declining stature of the international organization and increasing criticism of its performance in major crises such as Ukraine and the Middle East. Candidates from various countries are competing, most notably Rebecca Greenspan, who could become the first woman to hold the position, along with Rafael Grossi, Macky Sall, and others. The nominee must overcome the obstacle posed by the five permanent members of the Security Council before the appointment process moves to the General Assembly. Meanwhile, the chosen candidate faces challenges related to the organization's ability to restore its influence and reform its institutions, especially the Security Council.
