Iraqi Kurds Must Rely on Government
The article focuses on the situation of Iraqi Kurds following the withdrawal of coalition forces and the Iraqi army from the region. A final deadline had been set for the disarmament of Iraqi militias on September 20, 2026, which was later extended to June 30, 2027, amid escalating security threats. The Kurds are suffering from an increase in drone attacks by Iran and its allied militias, especially after the coalition withdrawal, with fears of terrorist cell activities similar to those in 2014. The threat of Iranian attacks via drones and rocket fire remains present, complicating defense efforts. Reports emphasize the need to bolster the Kurdish and Baghdad government’s air defense capabilities to confront these ongoing threats.
