Mozambique faces rising ISIS threats and gas disputes
ISIS continues to carry out armed operations in the cities of Mozambique, especially in the northeast of the country, where it is making progress despite significant international and regional support for the Mozambican army. The insurgency originated from a surprise attack on Cabo Delgado nine years ago, where internationally backed local forces failed to fully control the area due to limited military capabilities and allegations of human rights violations against civilians, including the killing of civilians and the exploitation of displaced women. Although they have received training and assistance from several international partners, weaknesses remain, including shortages of resources and supplies, increased attacks, and declining local trust, all of which hinder comprehensive progress in eradicating the insurgency.
