Alternative Party Challenges Meretz Strategy
The article focuses on the rising influence of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) in German politics, especially after it successfully gained support in a regional council vote in Saxony-Anhalt, breaking the barrier imposed on it by the main political parties. The party expresses its ambition to achieve an outright majority in the federal elections scheduled for 2029, despite being classified as extremist by German security agencies. It also fuels immigrant discontent and anti-Islam sentiment. The article highlights that the party's escalation raises concerns about the erosion of democratic principles, as the German government faces deeper divisions and economic issues stemming from war efforts and industrial crises. This comes amid declining support for traditional parties and the possibility of continued cooperation with the AfD.
