Ireland Tech Workers Protest AI Summit
The article discusses a Dublin Tech Workers' protest event held prior to the International Artificial Intelligence Summit, aimed at countering the negative impact of this technology on their jobs. Participants pointed to declining translation job opportunities and rising layoffs in the sector, highlighting the increased energy consumption by data centers and their relatively small employment numbers compared to revenue. Calls were made for a temporary halt to data center development and for the adoption of more sustainable industrial strategies. The event coincides with an international AI summit, with workers and unions calling for job protections and measures to mitigate the technology’s impact on professions in Ireland.
