Taiwan Defense Spending Aims to Deter War
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te announced that increased defense spending aims to deter war with China, which continues to exert military pressure and engage in gray-zone activities to alter the status quo across the Taiwan Strait. This is part of a policy to strengthen self-defense capabilities without seeking hegemony. The defense budget for 2027 is expected to reach approximately $34.5 billion USD, accounting for over 3% of the GDP, amid strong American support and military developments intended to safeguard sovereignty. Lai believes that peace requires a strong defense, emphasizing that Taiwan does not seek to dominate others but must have the right to exist in the face of ongoing Chinese threats.
