EU debates Lebanese mission formation
European Union foreign ministers in Luxembourg agreed to establish a civilian and military European mission to support the Lebanese Army and Internal Security Forces, aiming to enhance state control over territories and improve border and internal security. The tasks include providing training and expertise, with a focus on securing border areas, especially Christian villages that rely on special arrangements to ensure aid reaches returnees. There will be specific provisions for a transitional phase after UNIFIL's presence, under international cover to ensure the protection of individuals and the smooth execution of missions. Implementing the mission requires completing legal procedures such as the Mission Status Agreement (SOMA) and determining the participating countries, with potential French and Italian roles. This is seen as supporting Lebanese security forces and filling the security gap in various regions, in accordance with the Lebanese government's decision.
