Shin Bet to Launch Islam Study School in Southern Lebanon
The report discusses the development of an Israeli Shabak (General Security Service) program to establish a specialized school dedicated to the study of Islam. The goal is to enhance the understanding of its personnel regarding Palestinian culture and the ideology of Hamas. This initiative follows previous failures perceived to have hindered comprehension of the changes within the group since Yihya Sinwar’s rise and the influence of its founder, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin. This step is part of a broader review of the agency’s knowledge and intelligence tools, as technological advancements have led to a decline in interest in understanding religious and cultural backgrounds, resulting in a weakened capacity among experts to accurately analyze extremist Islamic groups. The project aims to improve the skills of the personnel, increasing their knowledge of religion and culture, especially concerning security challenges across various arenas.
