War's Impact on Southern Olive Groves
The article focused on the crisis facing the agricultural sector in South Lebanon. Security conditions over the past three years, especially near the borders, have prevented residents from accessing large areas of olive fields and have damaged the trees, leading to significant losses in production. More than 50% of farmers have been unable to harvest their olives. Tobacco cultivation, which is the region’s primary agricultural activity, has also suffered, with production decreasing by 40% compared to the previous year. Local residents emphasize that olive trees hold cultural and historical significance, representing a heritage that is at risk. There are growing fears of economic displacement resulting from deteriorating conditions and the increasing inability to invest in land, which may drive residents to leave their villages in search of other sources of livelihood.
