Europe urges prompt Palestinian elections
European Union Foreign Affairs Commissioner, Kaja Kalas, announced that the EU is renewing its call for Palestinian elections to be held as soon as possible, after President Mahmoud Abbas announced their postponement to 2027. Kalas reminded that European ministers expressed regret over this delay, which came after assessments of the complex security and field conditions in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem, conditions that currently prevent the organization of free and fair elections. This call comes amid efforts to successfully promote Palestinian dialogue and organize internal affairs, while France has expressed hope for reconsidering the postponement decision, emphasizing the importance of elections to unify political efforts and restore legitimacy to Palestinian institutions.
