Southern security confronts challenge
Lebanon is facing a significant challenge in the south after the UNIFIL mission's mandate ends at the end of 2026, amid uncertainty about who will oversee the area following the withdrawal of international forces. The European Union has launched a new mission to support the Lebanese Army and Internal Security Forces with advisory assistance for three years, relying on the deployment of 150 civilian and military personnel to strengthen state control over the borders and ensure security stability. Lebanon is at risk of an security vacuum in the south, especially since the area is partially occupied by Israel. There are fears that the absence of international monitoring could lead to escalating tensions, with legal and sovereignty guarantees emphasizing that the presence of international forces is essential support for maintaining Lebanese territorial integrity and sovereignty rights.
